You plug something in, and…nothing.
Before assuming you have a major electrical problem, there’s one simple thing to check: a GFCI outlet.
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is designed to protect you from electrical shock. These outlets are commonly installed in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, unfinished basements, laundry rooms, and outdoor locations where moisture may be present.
Sometimes a GFCI outlet will trip after a power surge, moisture exposure, or even because of a small issue with an appliance. When it trips, it may also shut off power to several other outlets downstream—even if those outlets don’t have reset buttons themselves.
Before you call an electrician:
- Check nearby bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets for a GFCI.
- Press the RESET button firmly until it clicks.
- Test the outlet again.
If the outlet won’t reset or trips repeatedly, don’t ignore it. A recurring trip is often a sign that something needs to be inspected by a licensed electrician.
At Kato Electric, we help homeowners diagnose electrical issues safely and correctly. If you’re dealing with outlets that have suddenly stopped working, we’re happy to help get everything back up and running safely.
